Candledave, yes I think we’re referring to the same thing. The end game makes it clear enough where it must start, but it seems to be at odds with the existence of a bar in the symmetrical position

Roll drums! Blast trumpets! At last I have finished!

Can I confirm a couple of things? One of the synonyms is very oblique, isn't it? Also, the five-letter word, if written in separate cells, will be rather larger/out of scale compared to the original?

A bit oblique perhaps, but I think clear enough.

I’ve squeezed the five letter word in to be a fair representation of the image, which I thinkis what the preamble is going for

Thanks Lex. I can't see the two words substituting for each other (they're different parts of speech) but as you say, the connection is clear enough. I'm guessing there isn't an exact position for the word and the ring then. Now I can get on with the rest of my life!

Out of interest, which synonym do you think is oblique as mine seem to tally pretty well.

CD, assuming I have it right (not a given), the longer of the ones for the fourth character.

I only have one synonym for the fourth character!

I don't see how that's possible. I have a four-letter word which is a synonym for the second definition in Chambers of the usual descriptive word, then a 7-letter word which is something associated with those described by the usual meaning. That is the only way I can see to resolve the clashes in the same way as all the others.
