The gallery is not Prado. The wordplay is a 4-letter word for gloomy, sad, despondent minus its first letter. There are two unaccounted for letters in the answer. An alternative clue would be a word for "to entice" minus an L.

The third word of the 19-letter message is longer than 5 letters.

I think I’m about ready to throw in the towel. I’ve got all bar one (the gloomy old gallery) of the acrosses, of which I’ve tentatively entered only 13. Shall I create jigsaw pieces with the remaining acrosses and play around with their potential positions? I’m not sure I have any remaining energy for that.

So for the ‘make off with…’ clue, I’m supposed to find a rare six letter word with only two of the six clued? With no help from any potential crossers due to potential clashes. Really? This might be the final straw for me.

I suppose I'm in the same boat as a lot of others here, in that I can't possibly see how to slot the across and downs together, without some sort of insight into what is meant by "larger-than-life characters [standing] for certain letters in down entries".

It may be impossible, because even the slightest hint would give the game away, but ideally I would love an indication of what this might mean.
