Finding this tricky - I have nearly all the answers but a grid that barely fits together and doesn't quite work, even with clashes galore. It's hard to know what to ask, but:

1) It looks like the 11-letter down entry should start in the top row and end in the bottom row. Is this correct? If so can anyone hint at how the heck that works?

2) Earlier in the thread, someone suggests 2D should occupy 7 spaces. Can anyone hint at how that can be?

Thanks.

Nxe, it's probably best to think of it initially as the down entries splitting to make way for some across entries, though the clashes complicate things.

Can someone give me a nudge on the 5th (banter) across clue. Also, does the "make off" answer occupy 10 cells? If it does I have some serious problems with my grid.

It's a 3-letter word for to banter or tease and a 3-letter word for mate all reversed, with an extra letter in the wordplay. The def is the last four words. The make off clue does occupy ten cells.

Apologies for misleading you earlier - I somehow read "happy" as "unhappy" - perhaps reflecting my current mood with this crossword!

Please, no need for an apology Loge. I deduce the 10 cell thingy by the merest tinkle of a PDM, but my drums and trumpets are rapidly gathering dust.

Well I guess (at least) one of us is wrong Loge!

I just have one 11 letter synonym but I make it that it contains 4 unchecked letters so guess there could be different options.

So I can try to enter some answers is the last letter of the bugloss clue a clash with two letters alphabetically adjacent? I still do not know what the neonatal test is and neither does my wife who works in the neonatal clinic in the hospital - God help them!!

I concede the point CD. I had assumed the US disorder started in the first cell of the space allotted by the symmetry, and the letter was thus unchangeable. That means the place it does start is, I think, the only cell where a clash isn't part of a "character".

Do we agree there are two synonyms in the fifth?

Gitto, if you have Chambers app or CD-ROM, do a wildcard search for "* test". The result you want is near the start of the list.

I have neither - but I will get one in the future. My IT skills are pretty horrific though.
