I think that if you put oil in a frying pan and then cook something in it, you are frying it. Frying doesn't necessarily have to be rapid. I do a spiced flattened chicken breast, which I cook on minimum gas on each side for 4 minutes, then 1 minute on each side on maximum.

Grunger, I think your egg clue is odd for a non-cryptic puzzle. Here's one for you and other PU members...

Win the Ashes perhaps, did you say? (4)

Yes, I managed to work it out...

I expect you sound the r in both those homophones, so the clue works for you, just as it does for me for whom the r is silent in both words.

I haven't a clue about the fried egg dish - well, obviously I do have a clue, but no idea of the answer. Give me cryptic any time.

Paul... the homophone doesn't work - at all - for me, and it never has. (We've had umpteen versions of this one over the years. ) I've just spent five minutes trying to make the 'r' silent... and I can't do it!

But, malone@194, I assume you sound the r in both EARN and URN, so therefore the homophone works for you, just as it works for me without sounding the r.

I dont sound the r in either, so it works for me.

I hope all this egg stuff inspires you to visit the market cafe soon. Do they regard omelettes as fried eggs?

If I ordered a fried egg dish there, I would get one fried-egg on a plate. I might go tomorrow.

Thanks, Jono and Grunger.

If/when I took the R out, both words sounded odd, incorrect. I've never manned/womanned a 'tea un' and I've never tried to 'en' a decent living

For me the EA has a slightly more "open" sound than the U. Would you rhyme URN with YEARN? I wouldn't.

Bunthorne: Tell me, girl, do you ever yearn?

Patience: I earn my living.
