Thanks MPRS, I've always enjoyed Latin but the Latin teacher at my school was a horrible man so I dropped it at the end of the third year 😢

Struggling here. I've cold solved all but 4 or 5 and confidently entered about 15 and mainly worked out a grid but....
Help with 'Settle rate....' (I understand this has an extra word) and 'Overturn measure...' would be appreciated.

Granama, the 'Settle rate'...' one has the usual whistle-blower inside a word meaning rate (in running, say, not financial stuff). You'll have an 'opening statement'.

Settle rate ... - 4 latter "rate" (as in 'speed') around a 3 letter "whistle blower" (as in a sport's event) - definition is "opening statement" - You can probably get from that which word is extra.

Overturn measure ... - 4 letter "measure" around 2 letter "American" then lastly a single letter "college" and the whole thing is reversed/"overturn(ed)" - definition is "break" as in a poem

Thanks Malone and Brendan, that should get things going again. I'd actually looked at the break word as an option but not linked it to the definition. Doh!

Is it reasonable at this point to ask which of the clues has an extra word? I think I have three of them, but not certain.

I have 3 that I'm reasonably sure of and guess the 4th is in either 'Backed demand...' or 'Younger policeman...' Not sure but I think they have the required word in...a short one.

Granama1, I have the short extra word in an across clue near the bottom of the list.

Granama1, I’m way behind others in solving this one but I think I have detected extras in the 5th and 8th across clues and in the 10th and 11th down clues. In 3 of those 4 my “extra” is the first word of the clue. But, unlike loge, who knocked it off in about 2 hours, I haven’t solved the puzzle yet so I may well be wrong.

Cheers Loge, I hadn't parsed that one...but I have now! It's the word that I was expecting so all done now.

I found this rather a slog but that's probably lack of sleep rather than anything else. I cold solved all but 4 even after entering 15 unjumbleds. Too much cold solving for my tastes. I suppose if the penny had dropped eariler it would have been easier.
