As I said there, I have a workable layout for the answers, which I hope is unique. Could someone perhaps confirm that all perimeter solutions are entered not jumbled?

Also, hints to the first two across solutions would be helpful.

Dylan, for the first across answer you want a word for a strengthening bar (also a part of the body) inside a word with similar meaning to "melody". For the second, it's an old-fashioned public school word for "look out!" round an abbreviation for reading (also writing and arithmetic).

I’ve made substantial progress on the back of your hints, now stuck on the answer for “1 down”, and I’m also struggling to parse my solution for “Settle rate……….”. I have a word that fits the definition, but can’t see the word play at all.

Dylan, the first down is a bits and pieces anagram (a middle letter, two outer letters and IS).

For Settle rate... you might want to remind yourself of the third sentence in the preamble.
