Belatedly adding my thanks and congratulations to Serpent. A great puzzle! For what it’s worth I had the extra words early on but couldn’t parse them into anything useful and went down several “IOU” rabbit holes. I backsolved them once I’d completed the grid.

Could I get a teeny hintette for people taking flight? I’m just not clicking it at all.

First time Listener solver here guys.

Been doing well. Got through a few of my remaining clues with the help of some hints on this board, and got my perimeter worked out I think! But can anyone gently nudge me towards these?

5 across (possibly thematic trickery here?)
9 across (something to do with musical beats? In which case I'm stumped)
15 across (religious leaders .. too many to choose from!)
5 down (I think it's a slang form of some 'fare' but really no idea)

Good luck, shifty! This might not be a bad first one, as it’s got plenty of Listener-esque play going on but doesn’t feature as obscure words or really fiddly clues that some can. It does need a lot cold-solving though!

The fifth across clue has an extra word. I wouldn’t usually describe it as a ‘plot’, but maybe an enclosed area for a particular type of produce.

The ninth across is not that kind of beat. In fact it’s a slightly obscure meaning for the word. Younger as you might put after a name, and the initials for a police force whose name has now changed, the whole thing turned backwards.

For the fifteenth across you need one who can get help and then reform to make a longer word.

The definition for the fifth down is the last three words.

I hope this helps ;-)

Ah, *that* kind of flight! Thanks tatters, now I don’t know why I didn’t see it before!

Thanks for that. I eventually got 5 across - the vegetable had come up recently somewhere else but can’t say I’ve ever met one in action as it were.

Beat … yes that does ring an etymological bell. Must be all those Susie Dent podcasts :)

Hadn’t heard of Younger needing it’s own notation before … this is archaic stuff!

Trying to finish this before attempting 4669...hints please for the across clues beginning...

Powerful channel...
Supply softer...
Wonderful letters...

At "Ephemeral reforms..." I have a leader who doesn't seem to be religious so had that as an extra word, but from thread hints this may be wrong?
