Hello from across the pond(Jasper, AL). I am trying to finish this week's Everyman crossword, but cannot figure out the clue about Persian cuisine. I have all the across answers, but the remaining clue eludes me. As far as I can gather, the answer ends in SETTERS, but I don't have the first three letters, so it looks like this: _A_
I am also unsure about the SETTERS part itself. Is there such a thing as NAN-SETTERS? I haven't found it on the Web. Can anyone help me here? I would be truly grateful.

Hi Jasper, and welcome to the Forum.

It's a bit early to give spoilers but I found Geeker's post @13 very helpful - take particular notice of the various things that a "Persian" can be.

PS - It's not 'nan setters'.

Jasper,
My hints on 13 were posts #4 and 11 of the thread. If you haven't seen the abbrev. &Lit before, it means that the definition is the whole clue.

[&Lit]...or. better worded, that the whole clue serves as the definition. Forum members periodically post lists of crossword abbrev's on the weekly Guardian Prize and/or Everyman threads.

Morning all,
A little trickier than it first seemed I thought. Knew the Tolkien reference but not 7d. Held up by 13d as I wrongly assumed it was going to be part of a rhyming pair. (Only one of those this week). I feel if a ? is used as a DBE indication it needs to be next to the word in question, maybe that’s just me. Agree with Brendan about the rather odd inconsistencies in style and too many meaningless surfaces this week for my liking. 11d would be my COD!

Just to explain... those of us who live across the pond now think of the word "holiday" to mean a specific day - a national holiday, like the current Independence Day for example. We've forgotten that "holiday" in the UK means vacation to us. I have friends in the UK who are very amused when I send Xmas cards that say "Happy Holidays" which they associate with something you'd say in the summer. Apologies for being so boring.

Can someone help with the parsing of 22D? The first two words seem to supply the answer but what has from France etc got to do with it?

Hi Cymro,
22d is one letter for France then a three letter acronym for an affliction. There’s another word that fits there which has the same meaning, I made that mistake initially
