I'm also confused by this dylan, I was wondering if it was a typo and should say symbol rather than letter?

Thanks, I probably need to get a few more clues before I can make any headway then. Currently only got 17.

If anyone cold solved the 'removed core of pasta...' I'd be amazed. It's a shame when you have to cold solve so much when some of the clues are so esoteric. I worked out what it had to be but I wouldn't have cold solved it in a million years. In truth I didn't parse it when I had the answer!

This one is really confusing me. The grid only seems to have room for entries with maximum of 9 letters but some of the answers have 10, 11 & 12 letters. Do these entries include symbols representing more than one letter?

yes the symbols are made up of extra letters from the clue answers ...sometimes it's only 1 letter from an across clue with 5 letters from a down. then anagram all the letters in the clash and ...

Thanks bunty, I had wondered about that but it just seems so lame after such an excellent puzzle.

So it's not the same letters from either direction? You get some from one word and some from another. It that right? How on earth are you meant to do this if you can't get all the clues with cold solving?

As soon as you can locate one cell and identify the clashing letters then anagram them, you will see the theme. In my case this occurs in row three, where a 3 letter down entry (def "circuit") clashes with a 12 letter across entry (def "beyond reach"). This should lead to a cell where one letter from the down entry, when mixed with five from the across will give you a word which can be represented by a symbol. The theme should then be apparent, as should the location of another thematic cell opposite the one you've just solved in the grid. Number of clashing letters can vary.
