My Latin doesn't extend to knowing that recipe means take!

Cretin, that recipe (written in italics in Chambers) , R, take ... stuff has come up in a few crosswords over the past year or so. I didn't know it initially, but found it when seeing what 'r' could mean!

Malone, I`d never come across R for `recipe`, `take` before but I know better than to doubt you - well done!

Cretin, I studied Latin to `O` level but only remember bits ... it was a long time ago!

Cretin66, 'r' crops up quite frequently in crosswords like Azed etc. Doctors would use Rx on prescriptions which I assume was shorthand for 'take x times/day'.
Nailing my colours to the mast it is one of my pet hates along with a 'v' for 'look/vide'. I also get a bit bored with other old obscure chestnuts like 'ea'. (A Fenland drainage channel). It all seems a bit lazy if the compiler has to clue individual letters or common pairs like that in order to be very cryptic and having done so they crop up again and again.

I don't like r for recipe! Why? How is it justified?
I have come a cropper trying to introduce people to cryptics with things like that. My (grown-up) kids saying - oh come on, that's ridiculous.
They are right, it's time to phase out historical stuff.
Now, IT, that means sex appeal.
He's got IT.... etc etc

I tend to agree. R for recipe is fairly obscure. Take for recipe requires more than a basic knowledge of Latin. But R for take is a two stage jump which seems positively unfair.

While we’re listing pet hates I find ‘on board’ for inside SS rather old fashioned these days

A slightly different Araucaria now.
"Thunderer measuring intervals" (9)
Now I have all the consonants in order, but all the vowels (inc Y) are missing and I don't know where they fit.

Intonator, a monochord, it measures chords. Intonate also means 'to thunder'.
