All done now, I think. Just one query. What is the “set” for 33d? Only 2 words fit in.

Forget that, I found it.
Wow, that was hard, hardest for a long time, but very satisfying. Now comes the boring part, trying to figure out what to do for the rest of the week.

Re. post 41 et al: as the grid entries for the thematic clues are arrived at by moving up or down the relevant lists by the required number, does it not follow that the hidden word has been arrived at by moving the specified number of places up from the original word? This would mean that the replacement word begins with N rather than J. Is anyone else thing the same as me?

Hi Opt0. I agree with your thinking in terms of making the hidden word follow the same approach as the others in the crossword. However, the preamble states “an instruction for its replacement word” which I think should be taken literally. To be honest, I think either option should be marked as correct. Perhaps the setter and the editors made the instruction/placement thus to be able to cover both interpretations?

Alas this one has simply proved beyond me. I note that the number of posts on this site is far and above the normal number, so I am hoping it was simply a toughie.

I had finished the previous three puzzles so I am disappointed.

If one of my regular helpers would be willing to take pity on me I will put a post on the other site ('may contain answers').

My congratulations to those who managed to complete
