I must confess to being completely baffled, not only by the clue to 32ac, for which I have the replacement word, but also to unclued's explanation of the parsing of it. I have the clue as 'LA's stopping Metro....'. So how does 'to cane..' come into it?

Finally twigged all the substitutions, couldn't have done it without the help given, thanks. I think I'll leave the grid-staring until tomorrow.

19 original answer - you need pan + a word for stock around O.
Extra word is Piper.
In 32 to caning = routing.
The positions of the letters in the extra words in clue order go 1 2 3 4 5 5 4 3 2 1. The three words don’t seem to add much.
