I agree with unclued that the replacement word begins with a J. Unless my counting skills have failed me even more than usual, the “direction” from the thematic clued answers to their replacements is sometimes forward, sometimes back in the order of the set (eg 1 across vs 10 down). The instruction for the hidden word makes it plain which is the right “direction”.

I felt that the clues for the thematic answers were the hardest of the lot, not helped by having no crossing letters. Some of the sets were obvious, others required hours of speculative internet searching, which took the shine off an interesting puzzle.

Actually reading through the posts I'm beginning to wonder if I'm even doing the same puzzle as you guys. I have an almost full grid but not a scooby as to what the substitution thing is about. Perhaps I'll take a break and return to my busy schedule of miniature making, jigsaw puzzles and dreaming up quizzes to email to the grandchildren to keep them amused.....ah - the joys of cabin fever!

No - you're right 10d is not the same (I'll have to think about that!). Is that the only one?

If I have the right sets, the substitution at 1 ac comes after the clued answer, but the substitution at 10 down comes before the clued answer. It may be that I have misinterpreted what you mean by direction?

Sorry we crossed. I think 6 and 32 across also follow the direction of 1 across, the others the direction of 10 down.

Yes, and I've just checked 6ac, ditto! Still, the 'instruction' makes the replacement we have certain (I think the orientation of the various lists is what confused me!).

I’m still struggling to find the replacement in 1ac. Abu ideas?
