No mistake, simond9x. The answer is somewhere in Chambers

Thanks Quisling. Hm... I thought I'd been up and down Chambers, Quinapalus, etc. Still, onward and upward.

It’s a ‘treated’ clue - and in the clue the word preceding the ellipsis is important.

I finished the crossword yesterday except that I have a number of clues that I cannot parse:-

16a Protective cover thrown over talking horse in theatre.

14a Helpful one gathering information on a ship

38a This could blow the doors off Mini Metro, overlooking actor’s two parts

33d Sandy’s been acquainted with Clark

Also I have no idea how the cut-up technique works with the seven treated clues and I haven’t been able to parse any of them.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Cut each of the seven clues into two (unequal) parts. Then shuffle first and second parts to make seven new clues. Knowing the answers from the grid helps back-solve the shuffling.

casanova - parse for your untreated clues - 16A read backwards as 2 2, 1 (abbrev), 3
14A first four woeds of clue defn - for 'on' think cricket
38A - after removing answer from the car - the 2 parts left is a kind of actor
33D - Sandy indicates Scottish - So scottish word for 'been acquainted' -Stick Clark in front of it and you have a famous alias

Found a gutter clue that I cannot parse:-

13a Number four of revolutionary programme, terminated prematurely

I am also wondering if you are meant to apply the cut-up technique to each of the seven clues or to all seven to generate the new clues.

Any help will be very welcome

That should have been further clue and not gutter clue
