Tony, I can only get the title by changing 1 letter in 2 adjacent columns, then 1 letter in 1 row, followed by 3 letters in 3 adjacent columns. That is nothing like the instruction in the preamble, but the worrying thing is that I do end up with a grid full of real words and the title on 3 consecutive rows. To say that I am confused is putting it far too mildly.

Gitto, I've exchanged "Legman" for lacred ( it runs over 2 answers) and the k of Kent with the r of what has become "lacred".

Thanks Tony, that gives exactly the same answer I got by doing it letter by letter. I didn't analyse the holistic change that I had made - but you have neatly explained it for me, or alternatively, pointed out my blinkered stupidity.

Tonynannini, gitto, the column operation requires moving more than one letter, or you are left with a non-word at 19d

Quisling, I don't know what you have moved, but in my version 19d is unaffected.

Perhaps because you moved the rows first, which is not the order required in the preamble
