Thankyou Quisling, very very nearly fell at the final fence - and it makes a much neater endgame. Note to solver (i.e. me) - I must never assume a word does not exist!!!!

Well, I got there in the end but haven't a clue why the answer to 10d is actually the answer (having three of the four letters didn't leave many options and it works after doing the shuffling about). Similarly 1a, not much else it could be. Also can't see the relevance of the title. Apart from all that.....I'd give myself 8.5/10, could do better!
