Good afternoon, Elle!
I concur completely about the hard work involved in absorbing the geology of the land and how it happened.
I was quite pleased to get past the dinosaurs, too.
The description of the diplodocus skeleton was incredible.
No wonder he needed all these experts for the research!
But then you get to the people and it is more enjoyable, for me, anyway, as the history and story develops.
I have not tackled Tolstoy.
After the first couple of chapters it gets much better!
Michener wrote Space, too.
About how the Universe formed, etc.
Way over my head!
I found that hard going until he got to the astronauts and the Space Race etc.

Hi, Rusty!
I think we perhaps make it harder for ourselves because we are insisting on fully absorbing - and understanding - and attempting to retain - what we are reading?
And in the case of an author like James Michener, that is a lot of detailed information for us to take on board all at once!
I am amazed already by the quality - and quantity - of his research - and I have only just begun the book!
On a lighter note, I have just had a phone call from BB!
He wanted to tell me about his first day at "big" school!
He is full of enthusiasm..... and looking forward to going there again tomorrow!!
(That is just as well as he will have to go there for a good number of coming years!)
Primary school wasn't considered such fun in my day!

Hello, Pigale!
We are being told that we are to experience the hottest day of the year tomorrow!
32C!
I can only hope it doesn't happen!
Unlike you, I wilt at the prospect!
I am almost looking forward to the coming of Winter!

Hi Elle,

It is highly possible that it is going to happen! It has been 32C here today and will be hotter tomorrow - but unlike our normal dry heat, there is a lot of humidity in the air and thus it is quite unpleasant.
iT will not last though.
And as mentioned in earlier post, house-martins have gathered and left todaY.

Hello, Elle!
Maybe his short stories may have been a better introduction.
Tales of the South Pacific, for instance.
His books are full of info.
For instance he will explain why the ranchers got rid of Texas longhorn cattle and chose the correct Herefords to improve the breeding stock, and many other things.
I liked the way he told all about the life of the Mennonites in Pennsylvania, and one of them, Levi Zendt, is probably my favourite character in the book.
Persevere, it is worth it!

Pigale, there's a very big clue in my post with the question!
Well done,Rusty - I didn't think you'd want to be the only solver worth mentioning.
