btw, have I asked you if you know the Square and compasses at Worth Matravers? It was a great pub 40 years ago, and I'm told that it still is!

Hi, Rusty!
Thank you for the link.
It is very interesting,
The Kipchoge challenge sounds to be a very involved process...…..
I hope it goes well for him.
I watched the British Men and Women's teams in the first round heats of the 4x100m relays
They did good; this augurs well for the Semis and Final, doesn't it?
And for the first time, there were huge crowds in the Stadium!
The commentators said the spectators must have come to see Barshim, the Qatar high jumper...
But the cynic in me did wonder about "Rent-a- Crowd".......
Especially just coming after the recent bad publicity??!!

Yes, Chris, we have talked about the pub at Worth Matravers before.
I know it is an old favourite of yours!
I think I told you we used to stay just down the road from there.

Good evening, Elle!
I find it very interesting and I hope Kipchoge can do it!
It is not on UK television but is live on YouTube.
There are more in the stadium for the local high jumper and the Ethiopians have runners in the steeplechase!
Much better than empty grandstands!
I hope the bad publicity is past.
I saw a tweet from Gabby saying Jess went home with one of her shoes last night, and left Gabby with her shoe.

A bit of an odd mix-up!

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, fingers crossed for Kipchoge!
It will be interesting to follow his efforts on YouTube.
The atmosphere in the stadium was certainly much livelier tonight!
Good to see!
It is far more encouraging for the contestants to hear the roar of a crowd, than empty silence.
We shall be up and off reasonably early tomorrow.
I shan't have any Internet access whilst I am away, so will catch up with you when I get back next Saturday!
Have a good week, enjoy the remaining two days of the Athletics.

Hello, Elle!
I am looking forward to seeing Kipchoge run!
The athletics should be good the next two days, although the marathon is not being televised.
And I have Enable to look forward to on Sunday in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
I hope she wins but it is a big ask!
I wish you and your husband a very pleasant holiday and a safe journey!

Rusty, I know you like athletics and I think you also like human interest stories - so here's something that combines both! I read it in this week's Spectator...

Dorothy Hyman, now 73, was from Barnsley. She picked up numerous medals at European Championships and Commonwealth Games. In the 1960 Olympics, she got a silver and bronze in the 100m and 200 m. In a recent interview she said, 'My father said that if I won gold, he would buy me a radiogram. I got silver and bronze and asked one of the athletes if that would add up to a radiogram.' It did - and well-deserved it was!

Hello, Malone!
Thank you for the tale about Dorothy Hyman!
I had never heard that one.
One little quibble, though.
Dorothy is 78, though she may be pleased to be thought several years younger!
I remember her very well, and the woman who beat her in Rome.
Wilma Rudolph, who was one of the famous Tennessee Tigerbelles.
The Tigerbelles were the women's track team at Tennessee State University, and they were superb!

Sorry, Rusty - but it was the Spectator who put 73. I think it must have been just a typo because the article mentions Dorothy being 19 in the 1960 Olympics - so she would, as you say, be 78 now.

The article had another little bit that I thought was poignant. Dorothy's career ended in 1964 after she wrote her autobiography - as she'd received money, she could never represent her country again as she was classed as a professional. The autobiography earned her the 'princely sum' of £150! When you look at all the money involved - and all the greed involved in some areas - in sport today, it really does make you think.

I loved the sound of the Tennessee Tigerbelles!
