I saw the chicks left unattended (and so unprotected) for about 5 minutes earlier this morning. Does this happen often?

I kept on eye on them, but I don't know what I could have done if they had been attacked!

Yes, that is sad about the Loch Garten chicks........the staff there will be upset , too, but I guess they had to do as they saw fit.

It is beautiful here... I think this is supposed to be set for the week.
I hope so, any way, as our landscape gardener is coming on Wednesday (for three days) to replace all our fencing, and do some minor work on the garden.
We put the "redesigning" idea on hold, as the grass is growing well at the moment!

I have on the very odd occasion seen the nest empty of the parents....but one bird or other has returned whilst I was watching, so I have no idea how long the chicks are ever left - I had assumed only for a minute or two?

why the mother did not go fishing herself, instead of letting
her chicks die.....?

Very hot here this afternoon - temp must be in the mid-twenties!
I too don't understand why EJ didn't consider it worth the risk of leaving the chicks whilst she went for food, but maybe it takes a long time to catch a fish?
And I suppose she needed to keep the babies warm...and to protect them against predators?
We have a heron here watching all the time for an opportunity to snatch one of the goslings.... and it only takes a minute for the heron to grab its prey and be up and away.
I'm not sure if birds can weigh up the pros and cons- or whether they just stick to "routine"?

I haven't forgotten the tennis....but unfortunately I have developed conjunctivitis in both eyes, and so watching TV/ computer screen for a long period is neither easy nor wise!
