Thanks jazzgirl - I thought 'x' was 3rd letter in 31 and there seemed to be only one 3-letter word that would fit in 27 down, but only now when I get 41 across (thanks) does it all fall into place - only two to get now but I will stop looking at it for a while - don't you sometimes find that when you come back to it it suddenly becomes obvious? Many thanks again.

Right -- finished all but one. I can't for the life of me see 28a (unless there's a word NEAC, not found in Chambers). The only other one I was unconvinced about was 33d -- I've got SAUCE.
I'm going to give my eyes a rest now before reading the volumes of previous postings.

The "one sitting" in 1ac is "bull" (Sitting Bull). Clever = neat, also being "ox, cow, bull etc" (but only ever seen in Crypticland).

Hope your eyes adjust very soon.
You will have to get rid of the SAUCE!
and ignore all my hints at it being such. sorry.

Not your fault, jazzgirl, I hadn't seen the hints. The only other word I can think of means 'dry' as a verb. Is that what we're looking for?

hello all,

got the crossword started last night and am about 3/4 the way through.

I eventually got 33d, still struggling on a couple of the BIG ones, my mind has just gone numb.

Off out again, but will get back to it later on.

Bullfrog, you behave...not too much ogling!

I'm still fairly new to the forum and am just wondering - is this setting a record for the biggest number of replies? The crossword was great to do and it's been fascinating to read all your comments back and forward, seeing all the different styles of hints offered. By the way Wendy I solved your clues first and seemed to be on your wavelength!

Evevning all,

I think that went well. 33D was a trcky bugger because even though House of Commons (HC) discussion (rap) turns was fair, we didn't think "a roast" sounded good and "a roasting" was unfair because it would have gained "ing" to the answer. So we added "issue" to hopefully try and singularise it back and make the whole clue run smoothly.
We maybe (in hindsight) should have stayed with "a roast" and apologise if it ended up grammatically unsound. A lesson learnt by me I think!
However, on the whole I think we can safely say that it was a good bit of fun and a hit with all who had a go.
I feel we should do it again in February and hope to see a few more of the regulars getting involved.
A few suggestions I would like to add is, I will keep the same email for contact purposes, asking for interested parties to contact me within a couple of days of the start of Feb, then send out the words giving a time frame for clues to be submitted, then a few more days for feedback and then on to a closing day in which I will format the final print.
I may require a second person to co-edit with me to help with grammatical correction, and need to consider UK/US differences.
This could take, maybe the first week or two before final publication.

If that sounds ok, then we haven't too long to wait (11 days).
Let me know your feelings for this

Thanks for all the help and involvement.
