Did not like this crossword at all. Looked up most of the answers. Some very obscure. Very convoluted parsing. No great moments of solving. Apart from maybe????????? Mostly just annoyance trying to work out the clumsy parsing after looking up answers.

Why do you say that the parsing is clumsy, Snowwhite? I’d say subtle, and occasionally convoluted, but isn’t that part and parcel of a good prize cryptic?

Well, if the answer that snowwhite has given is typical of this puzzle, then I'm glad I didn't bother. I have no idea what it refers to.

2d - the parsing is both very precise and clever.

Agreed, and thanks, brendan. It was my first choice as COD for a reason. A shame that in one and the same post the crossword was criticised and an answer was given.
