cockie

I have a completed grid, including moving the block of letters and identifying what needs to be coloured. So far, so good (although it's taken 5 hours of slog). The message makes no sense. Is it giving too much away to hope that it's 5,5,4,2,3,2,11,5,6,4? (That's the bit that's not the possible participants - got them.)

Cockie - there're 42 clues, but you've got 47 letters in your post!

I think the 5 after the 11 should not be there. You also have too many short words in your example.

Yes, you are correct - fat fingers. Without the 5 is it right?

I think it’s 5,5,6,5,11,6,4

I’m still struggling with the bottom half of the grid. I’d appreciate a tip for
Faults mistreated……..
And
Twelve roused……
Thanks

I think your first bit of addition is helpful, dylan, but not the second (might be worth looking again at how your 3rd participant ends, cockie).

''Faults...'' is the def - next word is the anagram fodder minus the usual two letters for... (backwards).

''Twelve...'' is the def - anag of 3rd word inside Greek region/province (4).

That is exactly the opposite way around on the addition front, sorry - first bit not good - second bit good.

I'm with gitto too, enough for today. I've a full grid, can see a block to move, got the message and participants sussed and ....... not a scooby as to what it all means. Perhaps a G+T and a break will give me inspiration (though I doubt it!)

I went with the 6 rather than 4,2 not that I think it makes a huge difference.

I didn’t think the sentence really worked for the general thematic hint as two separate words although I think it parses the same for the cryptic clue to the inventor

I agree with that, Candledave, for the same reason.

I think you're left with a spare anagrind doing it that way - in fact that's how I initially 'solved' it (and then spent about an hour - and several posts on here - putting it right). It's a clue of many possible anagrinds and the trick (I think) is getting them down to just two.
