I found the grid fill extremely difficult - and the "Level stair" clue is very clever, but I only got the right answer after I had filled the grid. I have the hint and the possible participants, but currently mystified how to finish this. I think I need to identify the inventor first.

Be warned that the endgame is tough. For every ten people who fill the grid by themselves, I’d be surprised if more than one works out the inventor unaided. Elite-level stuff. I was lucky it rang a distant bell. Thanks, Ifor!

My view is that getting the inventor first is nigh on impossible.

Getting the theme from the hint and the grid layout is very tricky too but more gettable I’d say

I've shelved this for today as I can't get either the inventor nor the thematic effect (CR?). I can move a block of letters leaving three areas with only real words in them - but that is a guess at the moment.

I shelved it too, Gitto. 22 done so far (and one of them speculative and unparsed) and my brain hurts! Breaking up 13 metres of fence brought down by Éowyn and transporting the remains to the tip was a lot easier!
