Hi Gitto like you I'm struggling with 6d but for 14 would recommend looking up Japan in chambers, second part is pretty straightforward after that I think

All clues solved except second part of 6d. Pleased at least to see I am not the only one. I'd appreciate a hint. Thanks.

dodgepot @ 26: i infer that the dedicatee isn't the bloke who composed crosswords and won lots of prizes, for googling him and 11/6 leads to a short film about an unpleasant affliction. googling the bloke from the asterisks isn't much help either, but I can't see any other way in. it's good that at least two contributors here have had their pdm so quickly, but the circles i'm going round in are getting smaller and smaller. can you provide the end to a bit of string which might be worth pulling?

The second half of 6Dn - definition is a Dorset (Bryanston) word for scuttling.

Formed by the initials of two words plus an obscure 8-letter word for smart…

Cockie, greengage, I’m sure there are many paths to enlightenment, but mine was this. Once the grid was filled, and the circled cells completed, I made quite sure I had the correct extra words to generate the right message. That’s crucial. Then you need to work out how to implement it. When you do, it should lead you to the title, and thence the dedicatee. Then the name spelt by the asterisked cells plus one letter should also make sense.

I think you could go down a fair few rabbit holes in looking for the puzzle’s dedicatee before you have the title.

thanks, dodgepot. i have a problem with the early extra words in the down clues, where what I suspect is the last word but one of the message is unclear. i still have no idea how to interpret 11/6 into things one could put in a circle - not letters, because there's only one of them, and it's clear. no doubt if that were satisfied things might drop into place, but that hasn't happened yet. there are at least 2 blokes who appear in the asterisks - one stutters and the other seems to have been written out too soon. red herrings?
