Surely there is some ambiguity of how the 11/6 phrase is represented - I hope that some leniency is applied by the checker, because I'm getting a little tired of looking for a definitive solution. On the basis neither can be a letter I do not see why it can't be XX,YY,XY or YX, where we know what X and Y are.

gitto - presumably you have googled 11/6 and the dedicatee - you should have seen how it is represented

Hi CD, I've done that dozens of times - seems like I must try again!!

Just being my normal stupid self - X & Y are used for emotions not words - so I'm going to fill in my grid and post it as I am tired of looking at it.

I enjoyed the challenge and the construction of this puzzle.

A couple of clues have defeated me, and I have no idea what to do with the first part of the thematic title, but that’s to be expected with a preamble that has GWIT written all over it.

Enjoying this challenge! Any help on how to parse the second part of 14D or indeed 17A would be much appreciated.

14D - 2 single letter abbreviations + 5 letter synonym for + double
17A - 7 letter word for lambs minus the middle letter

It is not true that the dedicatee last appeared in print when the preamble specifies. In fact, he appeared in yesterday's paper!
