Even with Brendan's help, I'm stuck at E-I-E for 28a. Any hints?

No, I got it wrong, and A-I-E is solvable!

(Problem is that I don't write the answers in till my husband has also solved them, just put a dot to remind me that I've solved that square!)

Got it, once I had the 3 crossers. So LOI definitely 28a.

Dear All
Finally finished, with a bit of help from thread and Bradford's

One question, why 8 down, I'm guessing because only word I think fits but can't parse it

Answers appreciated

Cheers

I've answered this earlier. "Calf" is a bit obscure, but their formation by "calving" is much better known.

Well I’m away so printed out the wrong Paul one. The pdf has now been corrected to Kite’s I see. When Paul’s is eventually published I strongly suspect a couple of the clues will be reworded. I’ve struggled mightily and still have two left. One I can guess but can’t parse, the other is a six letter word of which I have three letters and no solution in the English language fits the clue (I think, though of course could be wrong).

Would appreciate help with 19d please. I have b_d_a_p_ but can only think of a 3,5 answer. What's the relevance of couples?

Hi,

19d - If I've read it correctly, the "couples" just reflects the fact that the answer is plural so, instead of having 1 person "retiring" (or going to sleep) you have 2 - or more, whatever floats your boat!

I wasn't overly keen on this clue.

Actually, given that the answer is used "to throw light on the retiring couples", they would probably be reading rather than sleeping.
