15d is a sort of reverse clue - the first word is an anagram, indicated by the second word

I am pretty sure I have the answer to 8d from the word play but don’t understand . Can I have a clue please?

Calf is a small version of what you think the answer is - more usually heard in the verb form calve.

I'm glad to see my answer to 8d confirmed. I've done about half now and was beginning to get into it especially when I checked what today could be an anniversary of, so I've got the theme.

Took me some time to get the theme although it was staring me in the face. Putting a wrong answer for 15d held me up. Happy to give non spoiler hints to anyone who wants them

22 d took me a long time to parse as well. In fact I still haven't managed to do it.
Never heard k = kip and don't think a grimace is the same thing as a sneer.

22d is a very contrived clue, and not very good. You need to take two indicated letters out of the first word for a class act, to get a space traveller (thematic).

I parsed it as 3 3 the first pard being a school assessment and the second 3 being and act with the first letter removed

I don’t think your parsing accounts for the whole of the clue. I think chrise’s is correct, and I agree with him that it’s a bit clunky. As I said in my OP, it was my LOI because the parsing escaped me for a while.
