I’m left with 14A and 16D and clueless! I have C?L?E?? and ?? T?S respectively. Is 14A depression? Some not-so-gentle hints would be appreciated.

Face palm.... thanks dhope. How did I not see the animal? Very much overthinking. I was convinced there was an ancient obscure word for vampire that I didn't know.

Cymru you're looking for the actor in 14a. For the 'in her part' bit think what she'd need to learn.

Oh but the e is wrong. Look at the anagram for 7d

16d is a homophone. Letters are correct.

Late as usual and still baffled by several. Could I have a hint for 20a/24d, for which I have --a--,L---? That might help with 3 crossing words.

20a/24d - 2 letter "soldier" (US) + 3 letter "soldier" (insect) then scond word is 3 letter "overtake" (think 'athletics') goes around E(uropean) - definition is "monster effort"

It's also a very famous thematic phrase
