Roof for the theme look at post 4 on here by potentially thematic poster. That's how I got it.

Thanks Noeyedeer, I share your joy with those PDMs:-)

13d - 2 letter "soldier" then you have a 2 letter "officer" that goes around single letter "Spain" - definition is "top" (one that you wear) I was going to say it's not a well known word, but Roof's previous post already showed that is probably more to do with my poor vocabulary:-)

Ah! Is it a top one might wear rather than the top of something?!

17a - 7 letter "serf" reversed/'returning' and minus its outside letters/'no limits' gives the name of a specific "fever"... one I'd actually heard of! πŸ˜€

Thank you to all of you who responded to my request for hints. In the end I didn't need them as I solved all the answers before coming back to my laptop. Once I'd got 15ac, others fell into place. Isn't it always the way.

But I have had problems with parsing a number and with some unusual words. the parsing has escaped me with 1d, 3d, 18/26, and 30ac. I'd not heard of 10ac before or 23d. The Amercan dramatist was a mystery to me but I've now looked him up - a Pulitzer prize winner no less.

FOI was 27ac, LOI was 23d and CODs 8d, 13d (which made me laugh - it took me ages to spot the definition) and 26d.

1d: Insert "old" into your entry and you will have a bag.]

3d: Take a 6-letter word for put away as in eat, and remove the last two letters.

The other two I'm not entirely comfortable with what I have.
