Thanks mattrom.
I have it now. Didn't know that word. Thought of the similarly named drug but couldn't make that work.
I have full grid at last. But have six ambiguous cells (2 each in 18a, 22a, and 23a) so I'm confused by someone saying they had four.
I'm also thrown by the second writers name, as the only person with that name in my ODQ is a comic poet and he doesn't have many entries.
Just musing!

I'm with kindred here. This is a very challenging crossword, but I managed to get to the end of it and appreciate its ingenuity. All I'm missing is 1ac, and I seem to be the only person on this forum who's having trouble with it. The only possibility I can see is a two-word phrase that I wouldn't really call a "machine tool." Can anyone give me an oblique hint so I can finally put this puzzle to bed?

Finally got 23a!!!!!

Now, with severe trepidation, on to the end game.

It is definitely a machine tool. A variety of the first type of machine tool that came into my mind.
A 4 letter man’s name and a name for a splint in a 4 letter geographical point.

Lumen, the ambiguity in 18 is eliminated by the second sentence of the preamble.

Lumen @112, 18a has to go in jumbled, so that should resolve your problem.

the good news for lumen is that if (s)he wins a copy of Brewer (s)he will have an edition with good old Ogden in it.

foolish of me - too early in the morning. ODQ, not Brewer, but as it isn't offered as a prize lumen will have to go and buy a copy. Sorry, lumen!

Does the play title contain the name of a biblical character?
