I think I have found where I was going wrong. I drew my lines wrong. I'll try again.

Yes, it was careless drawing that did for me. I had used other factors to decide which of my seven compass points were correct and I had chosen correctly. But my drawing gave me shapes that would not allow me to complete the second (shorter) actor's name satisfactorily.

Ok, I have the film, I can see most of the letters of the two stars, I have a full grid and I have 4 and a half compass points.

Is 3d a compass point? It could be read as a normal clue, but it could have a (cardinal) compass point. V. annoying, I'm surprised the editors let that one through.

How does the wordplay for 33dn work? Does this have a compass point?

And same question for 15a.

Apologies if these have already been asked and answered.

33, first word is def. Word for spike reversed with abbreviation for prince removed.

15, case of home-brew is HW, surrounded by a fairly obscure word for head. Def last three words.

That should help you decide if they're compass points.

3d could be, and I thought it was but a bit of a shabby clue if it was.'s is a bit of a variable in crosswords.

But it isn't.

Thanks ukridge, I'd got there, but that was the key thing I was missing. I don't have a lot of love for crosswords where you can fill the grid in but then you have to spend 4 days scouring the clues to make sure your assignment of which clue is which type is correct. It's the kind of puzzle that makes me question why I consider this hobby 'fun' rather than a weekly chore like laundry.

I have a full grid (and a back up copy). I have a solid collection of compass points (2 in across, 4 in down) and three cut lines as described. I end up with five pieces that assemble into the same shape twice in different sizes (although one assembly requires reinstating part of a cut line - which caused me to ponder).

And now a blank. My internal database of 80s films is severely lacking, I fear. I did think of one very (in)famous title but the 23 cell limit on title and lead actors knocked that on the head (not too egregious a hint, to the film I had in mind, I hope). Ho, hum. Onward? Or just get on with other stuff - like life?
