Thought there may have been some discussion on 7d and 13d. 7D was my FOI. 13d was my LOI. Have I missed something in the clueing?

I'm struggling, like Brendan, only more so. About half way there, thanks to clues.

Please keep posting your summary and hints, they help us lesser solvers.

I think 7d/13d is a major gaffe and said so in post #2. Brendan agreed, darla disagreed, but little else has been said.

I think I’m with you and brendan on 7d/13d geeker. Parsing is clear in both clues, but it did make me unsure of the answer(s) at first.

davel, I solved 7 first and also scratched my head when the solution to 13 became apparent. Agree parsing on both is clear. Surely that pair would not be allowed in a Times puzzle, though I consider the Times guidelines too strict.

There seems to be a remarkable division of people who have commented into two camps. I am definitely in the easy camp; I can't remember a Guardian prize puzzle that I did so quickly and easily, apart from 2 clues. (1) I'm not sure whether I would ever have got 8d without hints from this forum. I see that I am far from being alone in having found that one difficult. (2) On the other hand I do seem to be alone in having difficulty with 2d. The solution is pretty obvious, from the definition and the crossing letters, but, assuming I have correctly got the "consignment", I can't fathom how "half the shop" means what it has to mean to justify the solution. Any hints? Please?

FOI 1a, which was an immediate write-in, though I agree with Chrise that the definition is wrong. LOI? Well, 8d if you mean last for me to realise what the solution is, or 2d if you mean the last one for me to fully understand, as I'm still not there yet. COD 7d, and on that subject I see no problem with having the 2 closely related words. 18a has particular significance for me, unfortunately.

Micky, if you can see ‘consignment’, then the first four letters are the shop and you remove the first two…

hi micky
2d think a 4 letter specialist food shop, then take the first 2 letters of a type of consignment
