I am 3 letters short of a full grid - but I have a bigger problem than that! I haven't a clue about 14a, and I can't fathom the word play for 34a,4d and 10d, but more than that I only have 7 of the misprinted forms (the 8th is, I think one of the 3 that I can't parse) and I only have 10 of the 15 missing letters. So now I have to trawl through all the clues again...........

Am I right in thinking that this puzzle explains the reason for the way in which we had to submit crossword number 4778?

Not sure I'm good at giving hints without saying too much....

For 4D, I was confused for some time - until I re-read the end of the clue very carefully, and then looked up the definitions of the the first word in Chambers.

For 10D, the 'and' clues 'n', if that helps.

14A is a partial anagram.

Sorry, can't find a way of 'hinting' at 34A without it away too much. I didn't think much of this clue anyway!

For 34a - I agree, the (5 letter) synonym for 'battle' is a bit of a stretch, but it is given as such in Chambers [so I agree with zabadak regarding overall fairness].

Now got the "8" and the song (currently searching for the 3rd,6th and 15th letters). Slowly getting there, no nudges required - I'll slog on.

Can't see where the 3rd letter comes from, but I have found the painting. Learning from last week, I am going to shelve this for a while.

I am very envious of people who finished yesterday! I have filled in the grid, and worked out the message and the "eight" things. Decades ago I was one of the cast in an am-dram version of this, so it brought back happy memories - though not enough to find any of the "features". I have printed out the words, and spent an hour staring at them and the grid, but nothing leaps (or even crawls) out. Is it too early to seek a nudge in the right direction?

Inching over the line now - got the 6 changes and the 5 new words and just need the pesky three now. Swannie - I can't give you a tickle, nevermind a nudge!

Am I wrong in assuming the last of the three is across? - and if in case it happens, I'm sick of proving that I am not a ROBOT!!

Their directions play a major part (but 'across' isn't one of them).
