everyone - I'm retracting my assertion that there is an extra thematic item, as I was taking "standard crossword directions" to be horizontal and vertical, which of course they're not! Right-to-left doesn't work and neither does bottom-to-top! I think in my fit of indignation I was determined to make a point, and sadly, as I still think this is a very poor "requirement", I failed with that one! (For those that are still wondering what my (feeble) point was, I was looking at the first letters of the clues.)

I still maintain that "11 letters, in standard crossword directions" should mean one thing or another, not both, and this highlighting requirement adds nothing to the puzzle other than some annoyed solvers!

polyn - I'm glad you've given up on the alternative highlighting, because it really doesn't work (as you've now accepted) but couldn't you be a bit more flexible regarding 'standard crossword directions'?
As I read it, there are only two 'directions'/orientations for entries in standard crossword grids, I agree with you there - but a direction is also a command. There are two such commands separating the two groups of clues in standard crosswords.

Thanks to the hints given already, I have grappled my way through to the last hurdle. However I cannot identify the second of the 2 unclued entries. Any help much appreciated.

It's the more familiar of the two unclueds.

No I still don’t like it!

If the 11 letters are “in standard crossword directions”, then either those 11 letters are across and down within the grid[\b], or those 12 letters are within[\b] the standard crossword directions, and the interpretation of those are wide open! I’d include the preamble and all the clues as “standard crossword directions”.

I think if both[\b] locations were intended then the wording should indicate that, and in my view it doesn’t!

Apologies for the dodgy highlighting! Optimistic to try it on my phone.

Came back to this one after a hard work week! almost all complete and thankful for a degree in the topic at hand for making short work of the unclueds.

Only one thing missing - 39a... any hints here please?

Thanks for the hint, Drxx. I’m sorry to say I have given up. I think I may now have the second word but don’t understand how it fits with the second one I have. Not my field of expertise by any means. Hopefully today’s puzzle may suit me better!

bodhere - if you do a search for the unclued word together with the theme word you'll get some results that contain helpful diagrams. Usually, the first line of any of the search results reveals the 'contents' you're looking for (you don't even have to open any of them, you'll see what you're looking for at a glance). Then do the same for the other word, maybe?
By the way, t's not my subject either- but something very like it will come along again very soon, as there appears to be quite an appetite for this kind of thing in literary circles (yes, I know - me neither!}.
