Thanks to Deuce for the challenge on a theme that I find as baffling as the source of the quotation. Not entirely convinced by the last bit of my highlighting, however.

Reference to the pesky HARE has led me to the third thing to be highlighted (I thought it was unfair then, and I do now: one day we'll have to highlight something on a different b----y page). I still haven't the faintest about the six (don't think I'm giving anything away at this late stage) down fancy answers: are they real words before being altered? Surely not all of them. And what the process is remains the 7-letter thing.

Hi Cockie,

Yes, they are real words before being altered.

I think the HARE crossword came before I started doing the Listener but I do recall reading about it on here and, if I've understood the hints correctly about the third word, that is very sneaky and outside the box.

thanks, brendan. I've solved the 8 clues and agree that all answers to the clues are real words. My problem is that when the "thematic instruction" is applied only 3 of them are still words, although a fourth is just about acceptable. It's the next stage which eludes me. If the non-words are entered I'm left with two 6-letter entries each with three unches. These are the initial letters of some thematic words - is this a coincidence, or have I stumbled on the way forward? As i posted much earlier, I think I'm overthinking all this.

@cockie - the fact that you have three letters in each of the six letter words………………The particular three in each is significant. You are almost there - a bit of Googling around the subject at this point cracked it for me.

Note by Admin - I amended the post as I was told it was too revealing, I hope I’ve deleted enough.

Can anyone who doesn't tackle Listener help me with 35a please?

Perhaps like penny I had not tossed. (7)

I have ANT*OID

(Retires to safe distance)

The additional information, about misprints, would help those without a copy. The answer involves an anagram.

Yes. Very remiss of me.

Can anyone who doesn't tackle Listener help me with 35a please?

Perhaps like penny I had not tossed. (7)

I have ANT*OID

For those without a copy of the puzzle, this additional information will hopefully help solve this tricky poser

In eight clues the wordplay leads to the answer with an extra letter that is not entered in the grid;
Each of the other across clues has a letter misprinted in the definition;

Jordan, why do you want someone who doesn’t do the puzzle to help? Just curious
