Drxx @ 6 - I don't think the setter was being ambivalent about the fighter being a T-, instead they meant that the Isis fighter was one of a number of possible examples of a T-, didn't they?

I've tracked down the previous appearance of "that is". It was more recent than I thought, appearing in 4757, the very clever carte blanche from Dolos where all the alphabetically listed clues were, we discovered, already in normal grid order.

Actually, 4757 wasn't a carte blanche. It was fully barred but unnumbered.

Hi Andy,

I hope Will doesn't mind me stepping in here but I was quite pleased with myself for actually figuring it out -

if you look up the abbr. you'll see one definition is a 3 letter adverb then, if you look up the definition of that, you'll see it is, indeed, indeed:-)

Yes, the BRB makes it rather deliciously convoluted. I remember a previous trip round very similar territory with Pabulum in The Spectator but this is the first time I've come across it here.

Hi Triceratops,

4a - 5 letter "hold off" minus its last letter/'most' inside 8 letter "modifying" - the answer (to me at least) looks like it would have absolutely nothing to do with "pessimism" but Chambers says ...
