andyp - 1ac: 1st word is def; the wordplay is 2 + 5 + 2 words.

I struggled with this, it's a bit obscure (I think). First word is the def - 'big stake' (3 letters) + 'on the highest point of' (4 letters) + 'the thing' (2 letters).

My thanks also to Sabre for an interesting and fun challenge.

All done other than 3a - which, if my grid is correct, has 3 unchecked letters in it.

Got 3a now and grid complete. For me this puzzle is a new, and quirky, approach to the grid fill.

Tough clues and some obscure words, but fair. Phew.

Agreed, and some difficult parses too - the "that is" and "wing" in 2a were both new to me and I fell hook line and sinker for the "ultimately lost" in the 3rd down clue.

2a had me puzzled for a long time, Brendan, but then somehow I dredged up from my memory that the "that is" formulation had appeared in another puzzle within the last year - I think was a Listener though I haven't been able to pin it down yet.

Another bit of wordplay it took me a long time to figure out was "indeed" in 5a.

Yes - 'that is' appeared previously - was new to me at that time ...
