No-one seems to have mentioned the significance (if any) of the two given letters in the top and bottom of the grid. Any hints?

I thought the givens were included to avoid ambiguity as otherwise you wouldn’t know necessarily how 4 and 9a would go or 41 and 43a

Enjoyed the gridfill but annoyingly stuck with one clue left (17). I can see the likely answer but not the wordplay, so have 2 possible options for the extra letter, neither of which make sense to me in the message

I think I have both messages apart from that letter and a good idea what to do, but can't figure out. Can someone confirm the fourth word in the across letter message is ?ID.

I think I've got it all including a good PDM in the endgame. Thank you Rebel. I'm still left slightly scratching my head with 21D. I can see the definition and the missing letter but I can't make the wordplay make sense. And it's irritating me. I also don't get how the second word of 17A codes for the two letters which I figure it must!

wordplay for 17a - within gives two pretty obvious letters and then you have the borders of Dungeness. The first letter of the answer is omitted

Scubaj - In 21D the first word of the clue, a noun, is the def of the 7-letter word. All the rest is wordplay.

Scubaj - for 21 d - a word for an outlaw, take off “barrel” and put “run” at the front
