Hmm, well 1a I can find no refs in Chambers, Collins, nor indeed the entire internet, to what must be the answer, judging from the several tips on here. And 42ac, surely the subsidiary indication is incorrect? I haven't seen anyone else mention it so must assume I'm being a doughnut, but can't see how. Pah!

Probes - since you have the 2-word solution to 1a, you will find its entry in Chambers under the second of the words, not the first.

Mondegreen. The second half of the down words eliminates the potential alternative. (Which I didn't realise until a few posts ago - see earlier posts - I had chosen the correct one, but only because it was neater!).

Thanks. No I'm happy with everything regarding the denouement it's just that I have options for the start of the second 5 (of 5, 4, 2, 5, 4). I'm pretty confident my grid entries are all correct yet I'm unable to determine how to resolve to the definitive the solution.

Mondegreen, there is only one option for the start of the second 5-letter word if you follow the guide given by the across clues precisely.

I may be late to the party but if anyone can give me a gentle nudge for 19d and 42a it would be appreciated. My missing letters are looking promising. But the big hole in the middle of my grid looks like wax moth has got at it and doesn't help with the tracing.
