After a nice workout for the grid-fill I am finding the endgame a tad underwhelming. Am I missing some fiendish twist?

Stuck on 3 clues, 17a,30a and 23d. I know what 17a must be but the omitted letter only adds to what looks like a very strange instruction and those from the down clues don't look any better. Here's hoping the magic of posting produces a smattering of inspiration. The Canadian artist takes obscurity to a new level.

Gitto - go with your gut re 17a - the across letters do look strange but do ultimately make sense (not that i have figured out the endgame)!

30a - wp = concatenation of two abbreviations, defn is first two words

23 - wp given by first 3 words, defn = last two words.

i have all the extra letters i think, but am struggling to fully trace an instruction. i get so far, then it breaks down.

I also havent figured out the relevance of the down side.

However am enjoying the puzzle, its certainly different and is proving a tougher nut to crack than recent weeks.

gitto, if I'm right the answer to 23d isn't specifically in Chambers as the def, though it's a well known term. Hope that makes sense!

I got 30a (of which I was in for years) and 23d within minutes of posting. My problem is the word in the instruction containing the letter from 17a.

Like others I have a gridfill - and a whole lot of extra letters. Is it giving too much away to seek confirmation that the A and D messages are, respectively, (3,2,3,3,4.10) and (5,3,4,9)? But meaning ..remains a mystery.

thats what i have cockie - but am also stuck. I have used the guide from the A but although this starts promisingly, i cannot seem to find a sensible way to complete it.

andyp - I've worked out what to do given by the A letters, doing exactly what it tells me, and it makes sense (interpreting the penultimate word correctly was the inspiration). The D letters remain a mystery.
