Well I thought I was.

The path bounces off of non-arbitrary letters, thematically.

HW7...so it does! Hadn't noticed that.

By the way, I struggle with parsing 19d ('In the Bahamas....). The answer to be entered is clear, as is the letter to be omitted but, and I assume the def is the last 2 words, I can't come up with a satisfactory word. No-one else has mentioned it so I assume I'm being dim. 🤔

Hi Mattrom, thamks. Does it make 'a stroll or leisurely journey'? Which, I guess could fit the definition. That was all I came up with other than a word that is something to do with speaking indistinctly.

granama - you’re using the wrong missing letter

Thanks Candledave. Got it. I didn't help myself by working a bit untidily and had left my initial (wrong) omitted letter for 14d next to my correction and then made a suitable word second word that fitted the bill. Doh. That'll teach me to tidy up!

Many thanks Ozzy and Candledave. I had the correct 5, 4, 2, 5, 4 instruction, but had not read the preamble carefully enough and had missed the significance of "self-referential". This foolish mistake resulted in me looking for an alternative route. Thanks again.

hw7, let me try and clarify without giving too much away. I think we are probably saying the same thing.

The across clues lead to a phrase 5, 4, 2, 5, 4. I believe that the very final step impacts the final letter of this phrase, whose position can be described as the penultimate word from the down clues. This final step involves a non-arbitrary letter as you point out.

Hi,
In terms of applying the 5, 4, 2, 5, 4 reference is anybody finding they have more than one "solution"?

I'm trying to keep the question vague in order to avoid giving anything away.

Thanks
M
