Woke at 5 am, couldn't get back to sleep, so carried on with this (had plenty to do in the NE quadrant) and finished it!

Enjoyable, and Google gave me the second name and the explanation of the theme - but I have one complaint.

2D - 'from the East' - fine if this was an across clue but nonsense in a down clue.

Sorry, make that 'plenty to do in the NW quadrant'. Always was hopeless at geography.

Re 17: sorry, I meant I understand that I’m looking for a synonym for “in comparison to”, and will remove the final letter, but can’t find anything to fit. Unless I’ve misunderstood? (I have “attention”, obviously)

Yes, as the preamble says a change in order is needed, ie an anagram.

9 down is thematic, a double definition

Pebble. It is the relevant section of the clue that is from the East - not the grid entry.

Can someone please explain the significance of ‘that’s not done’ in 8d? Seems to signify a particular letter is missing, but its not the last letter - in which case it feels rather weak.

Think it's a reference to behaviour that's "not done" i.e. non-U.

Fair enough, but the usual convention is to describe the direction according to the grid entry.
