I've completed this and understand the significance of the thematic entries, have the colleagues (one of them is a famous local...to where I am at the moment). I do not see the significance of the thematic locations of the five that have to be changed. Is it possible to clarify without too big a hint? If not I'm happy to ponder and wait. 👍

Granama1, I've just finished. I think the thematic locations relate to what gets added. I'm not 100% sure though.

Hard to answer without giving too much away. If you look at the wiki entry for the theme you should come across a description of why the theme is what is is which relates to the location of the thematic clues.

Thanks both. I'll ponder and delve. Three of them appear to make something recognisable...

G1 - how would you identify the positions/locations of the changed answers to an observer?

HW....for the avoidance of doubt, I'd use the clue numbers...if the other person had a copy. If not, hmmm.....probably by reference to shape and general location. More pondering.....🤔

So is there a reason why we are treating the changing grid entries the way we are ?

(as opposed to finding our own real words that fit the crossers)

dsc...tricky to hint but I eventually found a hyphenated version of the last four words. The dancer is quite a common crossword one and the small coin doesn't have many letters.
