Quixote, I understand what you mean about the two additional thematic answers, but clues to those could not have given the grid entries. One of the across or down entries, that I'm talking about, could have been clued differently to provide the grid entry, leaving just one to be changed. I feel that this would have fitted the theme much better. Perhaps I'm missing something obvious, in which case I apologise.

Rhona - to avoid any confusion, the five 'changed' entries and the 6 'thematic' entries are two distinct groups. All six of the 'thematics' are 'chimaeras', and all six are answers to their relevant clues, allowing for the 'chimaera' convention in each case.
There are 5 'changed' ones where only four are needed, and 6 thematic 'chimaeras' where only 4 are needed, because Aedites has simply gone along with usual practice where checked crossings occur - it's difficult to see what else he/she could have done, without a probably impossible redesign of the grid.

Hope this answers your query.

Nearly all done, but a little help needed to complete…

5ac: Cannot parse this at all. I know the missing letter, but that is it!

17ac: Understand the clue thanks to an earlier post here, but no idea what the unchecked letter is

And I don’t understand the title.

(I have everything else).

Thanks!

Thanks to quixote and numbskull. I had made one mistake but now completed. I am disappointed in my slow progress as my wife and I enjoyed an excellent 2015 film on this very situation.

In 3 down I have the (probable!) answer but I cannot see how 'whistle' fits into it. How is it the same as an arrow in a pub game?

Thepost - look at the 7th definition in Ch. of the word in the clue.

Adeano - 5a - not sure about the parsing of the first part of this myself - just accepted it as the only possible solution fitting the definition!
I got a number of others like that...as I said earlier, 'more luck than judgement.'

17a is a f. proper name not in Ch., its meaning is synonymous with the last word. One bearer of it was certainly everything the definition implies.

adeano,
5a def first two words, in English is an abbrev. Latin word, person's image is 3-letter word which is reflected ie reversed.
17 if you understand the clue you must know what the unch is. Do you mean one of the 11 omitted? bc it doesn't contain one of those either!

I have all the thematic entries, but can only make the top half work by changing more than one letter in the affected entries, esp. 12 down. Is this correct? I don’t understand the wordplay for 9 down in any case. a hint would be appreciated.
