hw7, I have a full grid and entered the 5 answers to make real words. I have 2 problems. Firstly, an across clue seems to be in the wrong tense and secondly, haven't a scooby ass to what to do in four cells. I hope that makes sense. No hints please, I'm anticipating a PDM soon.

...............then, of course, it becomes so blindingly obvious!!! Still cannot see where the last letter comes from in one particular clue, unless there is a misprint in the clue.

.............but I only had 10 of the 11 omitted letters on my spreadsheet. Everything good now.

It's funny how two independent people fall into the same thought pattern - essentially 'oh, look, the silly and lazy editor and subs have gotten it wrong, again.'

I've only made this naive error about a thousand times, so hopefully should start to see some improvement soon...

hw7, I do the same all the time and the number of times I don't understand a clue because I haven't looked at the setters name is incalculable. Less haste more speed springs to mind.

All done except a few niggles…Just stuck on the “six other answers must be entered thematically” part. I have 4 of them that represent the theme nicely but cannot find 2 more, nor can I imagine what they might be. Please send help. Also 17a is a mystery to me.

Silly me! There are of course no more to find! The six means six clues leading to 4 cells affected! Still don’t understand 17a.

Second part of wordplay - you’ll have the first - is ‘in comparison with’ - archaic - minus last letter.

Definition is one of those meanings-of-a-name answers.

How to ask this without giving anything away.... can anyone explain why one number in a thematic location should be treated twice (across and down) was this expediency or have I missed something clever?

Nothing clever.

Could have had 6 x 1, or (1+1) x 2 + 2 - same fulfilment of requirements.
