Sorry about the wrong hint, try anagramming "a new" with two usual abbreviations. I do agree "answers only" is misleading and not very well received by some.

Would I be correct in assuming that 28d is an anagram indicator? I've applied it the circled letters and all I get is a 2 word phrase meaning that's a derogatory term for popular culture that has mass appeal - am I on the right track or should I prepare for a journey back to the drawing board?
