Steady progress since I started about an hour ago but some of the parsing I find a bit of a challenge. Any guidance on 10d? If I have 15a correct there only appears to be one possibility and I can't really see the housemate in 15a but again, the answer seems obvious.

15a - Is a subtractive anagram but this spelling is in Collins and not Chambers.

10d - Is a sort of &Lit. 3 letter "that" for Cyrano around/fencing 3 letter "technique" - definition is an attack in fencing

10 down is an &lit - Cyrano was French so a French word for "that" outside 3--letter word for technique.

15 is an anagram of HOUSEMAID minus SHE'D

Can anyone give me answers for 1a and 21a (not hints)?

Thanks Granama, I was on the fencing team at school but I don't think I ever came across that word - or if I did I can't remember🤔

Ploughty, I think it is a little early for direct answers, but 1a is a German word with a couple of directions in it and 21a is a 4 letter term for being in the usual abbreviation for credit.

A hint to understanding the preamble would be nice...............................
