Thanks drxx.
I can see one 5-letter word which looks appropriate. But not two words.

Thanks Candledave, I may be getting there, having identified 56 contiguous and cells, in a regular shape, and in addition to the thematic material only (not the figures)

longhare - the figures should be included and you should end up with one connected shaded area

Thanks tatters. So in 5a, s is extra, below means inside and the answer somehow means engrossed?

SH, the extra letter is in the penultimate word of 5 across (there's only one possibility). A synonym for what you're left with (which also means to dance) goes around the usual one-letter abbreviation for upper-class and an anagram of thug. Engrossed is the def - in a financial sense (it's in Chambers).

I spent a long time assuming that the first word of this answer was CAUGHT.

I have the two symmetrically placed figures (16 cells), the thematic items relating to end of verse one (7 cells) and end of verse three (9 cells) but am not sure where to find the remaining thematic material (presumably another 31 cells, ie 47 minus the 7+9 I've already found). Do the remaining cells relate to the ends of verses two and four? If so, how? Any hints welcome
