Phew! Got there in the end. 103 cells affected - hurrah!

Now I feel the need to go and see the thematic source again. I know much more about it now!🙂

Planks, when you say the second hint do you mean the one at the ends of the clues or the second half of the extra letters? If the latter, have you had a good stare at the puzzle title?

CD - ref your post @ 121. I only have 43 of the 47 + 16 for the figures. I can't see the 2nd from the extra words at 6d/22d which lie beneath the two from 1a/16a extra words.

Thanks granama1 I hadn't really looked at the title - I have now - very clever. It was the extra letter hint I was referring to. All done now.

gitto, that's the one which splits.

loge, I was misinterpreting the third word of the instruction.

I think I have grid-staring stupidity setting in. Firstly "one part split" is a little misleading as I assumed it was one of the 4 parts, not one of the thematic items. Secondly, I haven't a scooby what the message from the down clues (5,5) means and finally 47+26=63 leaving 93 cells. An earlier post suggests those of the 47 in peripheral columns form part of the 103 - but why? Only a hint please - nothing else.
