I'm watching Italy against Uruguay in the rugby World Cup. It's refereed by Australian Angus Gardner, whose voice we hear. Does anyone else think that he is doing the voice of Carl the wombat in the "Compare the market" adverts?

....also if commentators want to say "azzuri" rather than "Italy", could they please say "atzuri" rather than "azuri"; after all, I doubt that they would order a "piza"!

While we are on about pronunciation, I keep hearing pastoral as pasTORal. Then, again on BBC radio, docTORal (thesis). Surely not right? Perhaps should be in the Pedant thread.

Also I have always pronounced worry as 'wurry' to rhyme with hurry. I'm almost sure I hear some people rhyme it with lorry.

Just as "pizza" is "pitza", "azzurri" is "atzurri". Italians on the whole are very conscious of double letters!

Thankfully I don't think I've ever heard "worryy" to rhyme with "lorry".

PAStoral symphony, but pasTORal care?
I think docTORal is always correct, but I'm not sure.

I was always brought up to stress the first syllable in trisyllabic words ending -oral. So pas-TOR-al, doc-TOR-al, and temp-OR-al all sound ridiculous to me. As does elec-TOR-al, which I hear increasingly often. Would anybody really say “Lords SPI-ritual and Tem-POR-al”? Mainly imported from across the Pond, I fear
